North Alabama prepares roads for possible snow, ice
HUNTSVILLE — The Alabama Department of Transportation is preparing for an anticipated snow and ice event that could impact travel tonight through Wednesday morning.
Crews are working to pretreat all state routes across the 13-county North Region. All bridges have been pretreated with anti-icing chemicals. Pretreatment of roads with brine began Sunday morning and is still ongoing. Most lanes of interstates and most state highways have already been addressed.
After pretreatment operations conclude in late afternoon or early evening, some treatment of high-risk areas with granular salt may take place tonight during the period of rain expected to precede snow.
After midnight, crews will remain on standby, prepared to begin clearing roads as needed with truck-mounted snow plows and salt spreaders.
ALDOT’s Regional Traffic Management Center will be active around the clock until the predicted weather event has concluded.
