Orchestra’s pops concert to spotlight superheroes, movies

MADISON – Madison City Community Orchestra’s annual Pops Concert will spotlight super heroes and movie blockbusters, along with masqueraders in a costume contest.

Traditionally, MCCO selects a theme for its fall pops concert. “This year’s concert is all about super heroes, ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Star Wars,'” MCCO Director Sandy Weisner said. “With Hollywood’s new hyper-focus on the super heroes, I thought it would be really fun.”

The concert on Oct. 28 will be held in James Clemens High School auditorium at 7 p.m.

This year marks “Jurassic Park’s” 25th anniversary and “Star Wars” recent 40th anniversary. “I decided those were worth mentioning. MCCO has an emphasis on the longevity of orchestra works, in both the classical and the pops worlds,” Weisner said.

MCCO will play excerpts from “Superman,” “The Dark Knight,” “Wonder Woman” and “Spider-Man.” The musicians will perform movie themes for “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World” and “Jurassic World.”

Their “Star Wars” medley will include excerpts from “Duel of the Fates” “Revenge of the Sith,” Princess Leia’s theme and “Imperial March,” along with the theme from all six episodes.

The citywide costume contest will award prizes for “Most Authentic,” “Most Creative” and “Judges Choice” Age groups for the contest will be kindergarten and younger; grades 1-5; grades 6-1; and adults.

“Come dressed as your favorite superhero or dinosaur or ‘Star Wars’ character,” Weisner said. James Clemens Tri-M music society will judge costumes during the concert and announce winners during intermission.

“One MCCO mission is to further the education of music,” Weisner said. “These Tri-M kids will not only get credit for their group but will show that even high school kids have an appreciation of orchestra works.”

In addition, a surprise guest will visit. “Suffice it to say he’ll create a big roar,” Weisner said, hedging any clues.

“Our pops concert will be upbeat and fun, as well as enabling folks to realize that the movies we watch would be nothing without the scores that are written for them,” Weisner said.
