Mustangs Claim Region 8 Crown

SCOTTSBORO – Madison Academy rallied in the fourth quarter Friday to take a 34-26 win over Scottsboro and capture the Class 5A Region 8 title.

This is the first year at the 5A level for the fifth-ranked Mustangs (7-1 overall; 6-0 Region 8); the Wildcats fall to 4-4, 3-3.

Kyle Minor scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead score on a 54-yard run to give the Mustangs a 27-26 lead early in the quarter. Then, with 5 minutes left in the game, Minor wrapped up the scoring on a 49-yard run.

The Mustangs held a 21-12 lead at the half, helped by a pair of Avery Seaton touchdown passes. Seaton connected with Minor on a 78-yard TD pass and found Daniel Brent on a 28-yard catch-and-run. Brent also had a four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to spot the Mustangs to a 7-0 lead.

The host Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 26-21 lead before the Mustangs rallied.

Madison Academy lost starting quarterback Luke Nail and, later, Seaton to injuries. Seaton finished with 177 yards passing and the two touchdown passes before leaving the game.

Minor had 107 yards rushing on just seven carries.

The Mustangs host Arab on Friday.
