Late-game heroics lift Sparkman over Grissom

HARVEST — Rondell Cole scored on a 60-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds in Sparkman’s 17-13 win Friday night over Grissom.

The Senators trailed 13-10 when quarterback Hunter Martin found Cole downfield for the scoring play with little more than a minute to play.

“We got the win,” said Sparkman Head Coach Laron White. “It wasn’t pretty but our guys hung in there …”

Grissom took a 13-10 lead with a little more than 2 minutes to play on a 45-yard TD pass from Caleb Peake to Jerwuan Thomas.

Sparkman (3-0, 2-0 in Class 7A Region 4) takes on Huntsville at Alabama A&M and Grissom (2-2, 0-2) visits Austin.

The Senators led 7-0 at the half on Chris Joiner’s 4-yard run and ran the score to 10-0 on Miles Tillman’s 25-yard field in the third quarter.

The Tigers cut the score to 13-6 when Peake hit Jason Stogner on a 13-yard pass in the fourth quarter.
