Strong second half spurs Madison County win over Guntersville

GURLEY – Madison County rode the arm of Austin Mills and legs of Mekhi Burdette to rally for a
16-7 win over Guntersville.

The win for the Tigers, 1-2 overall, 1-0 Class 5A Region 8, snapped their season-opening two-
game losing streak. They will travel to East Limestone in a Region 8 contest Friday.

“Our guys played much better in the second half,” said Head Coach Scott Sharp. “Defensively,
we played pretty well for most of the night.”

Senior linebacker Ronin Jones led Madison County with 10 tackles and Micah Burdette had 8
tackles; Sam Bulman forced and recovered a fumble.

But Sharp said some improvement is needed on the offensive side of the line.

“Offensively, we still are too inconsistent,” he said. “Fortunately, we made a couple plays in the
second half.”

Mekhi Burdette rushed for 135 yards on 27 carries, including a touchdown, as the Tigers piled
up 198 yards on the ground.

Mills, a junior quarterback, hit fellow junior Quamaine Gamble for a touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Senior kicker Wiley Henshaw had a 25-yard field goal for the Tigers.
