Library to host ‘Once Upon a Winter’s Night’

MADISON – Boys and girls can dust off the magic wands, air out their capes and exercise their wings for “Once Upon a Winter’s Night” at Madison Public Library.

The library staff will present a magical evening for children, teens and adults at this special, after-hours event on Feb. 23. The fun will start at 6 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m.

Branch Manager Sarah Sledge, Assistant Branch Manager Amanda Campbell and youth services librarians Maggie Allen and Lisa Blackmon have scheduled numerous activities during the evening. Teen volunteers also are helping produce the show.

All ages can enjoy games, movies and music.

“Join us for a special family event at the library,” Allen said. “We will celebrate fairy tales through puppet shows, games, crafts, music and more! Meet real princesses and learn new dances.”

The puppet shows will feature variations of stories in children’s literature, like “Rapunzel.” “We will sprinkle in a few refreshers about (etiquette and) manners so all are prepared to interact with the royalty that the audience will encounter throughout the evening,” Blackmon said.

The librarians encourage guests to wear their pajamas or dress in garb like their favorite character from fairy tales.

Dance lessons will be another option during Once Upon a Winter’s Night. “Dancing will be informal and will include group dances simple enough for our youngest patrons to learn and enjoy,” Blackmon said. Campbell has led the participants as dance instructor in the past.

Moms, dads and their children can settle for a feature movie. In 2017, Snow White herself visited the party while everyone was watching Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Complimentary refreshments will be served.

As many as 300 people have attended the event in previous years. Madison Public Library’s address is 142 Plaza Blvd. For more information, visit hmcpl.org.
