Bob Jones’ play, 92 acts qualify for state Trumbauer
MADISON – Bob Jones Patriots Players once again will represent the district at state-level Walter J. Trumbauer Theatre Festival with the one-act play, “The Recovery Act.”
At district Trumbauer competition, Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools proved the expertise of fine arts in Madison City Schools by claiming the two spots for North Alabama in the state contest. Schools from four counties competed for these honors.
Theatre teacher Mary Davis said this preliminary qualifier for state “was the most competitive festival I ever remember having at the district level.”
Guerin Tidwell was awarded “Best Actor” for the one-act. Four actors In “The Recovery Act” were named to the All-Star Cast: Suzi Glover, Addie McAbee, Justin Peel and Brendan Worley.
“The Recovery Act” received the “Best Set” award.
“We won’t have much time for major changes” before the state festival,” theatre teacher B. Dwayne Craft said. “It’s a tight turn around this year because of the way fall break/Thanksgiving lands in the calendar. Basically, we come back from Thanksgiving and go to state.”
In the Individual Events segment, students acted in solo and ensemble performances. “We had 105 Individual Events to enter, and 102 received superior scores. Of the 102 superior scores, 92 qualified for state competition, and 32 students received perfect scores from at least one of their judges,” Davis said.
“These scores are the best that we have ever done for Individual Events,” Davis said.
Duet events that advanced to state are Corey Tolbert, Michael Willis; Allie Dutton, Eliese Roberts; Bonnie Dickerson, Xander Voigt; Alydah Anderson, Addison McAbee; Suzi Glover, A. J. Revera; Anna Spangler, Brendan Worley; Kat Cota-Robles, Jonathan Purlee; Jeremy Sailors, Laura Neavu; Katie Beth Davis, Jude Franks; Soumyaa Utlapalii, Chloe Johnson; Maren Stauch, Laura Conner; and Sija Headrick, Love Lundy.
Solo events qualifying for state are Brenna Kilpatrick, Makynzie Smith, Zachary Johnson, Carmen Retzer, Regan Harris, Jenna Lundberg, Emilee Lamps, Katie Beth Davis, Soumyaa Utlapalii and Cameron Johnson.
Madison theatre students from Bob Jones and James Clemens will perform for state awards at the Walter J. Trumbauer Drama Festival at the University of North Alabama on Nov. 30 through Dec. 2.
