Commission collecting for Harvey victims this week

MADISON COUNTY – Members of the Madison County Commission are working together to collect items for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Commissioners contacted personnel with Liberty County, Texas, just east of Houston, to arrange a drop off in upcoming weeks. The utmost need is cleaning supplies. Houston area residents have emphasized repeatedly that they need all types of cleaning items as they return to their homes and starting the huge process of cleaning up and recovery.

Harvey victims do not need clothing at this time.

The following sites will serve as collection locations:

* District 1 — 9457 Moores Mill Road in New Market and 3699 Winchester Road in Huntsville. September 5-8, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* District 2 — 100 Plaza Blvd. in Madison. Sept. 5-8, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* District 3 — 149 Walnut St in New Hope and 4273 U.S. 72 E. in Brownsboro. Sept. 5-8, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* District 4 — 6084 Hwy. 53, Harvest. Sept. 5-8, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* District 5 — 7901 Bailey Cove Road (former Grissom High School). Sept. 6-8, noon to 6 p.m.

* District 6 — 3210 Hi-Lo Circle and Robert “Bob” Harrison Senior Center at 6156 Pulaski Pike in Huntsville. Sept. 5-8, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Numerous types of items will help residents in recovering from Harvey:

* Bottled water, Gatorade and sports drinks; and nonperishable food items.

* Buckets, shovels, two-gallon sprayers, bleach, cleaning detergent, mops and brooms.

* Paper towels, large garbage bags, rubber gloves, masks, scrub brushes, scouring pads, sponges and air freshener.

* Personal hygiene needs, such as toiletries, bar soap, hand sanitizer, bar soap, shampoo/conditioner, adult diapers, disposable razors, shaving cream and toilet paper.

* Infants’ needs like diapers, wipes, baby food, formula, sippy cups and bottles.

* Pet supplies like leashes, collars, pet food and cat litter.
