Council’s larger payments go to library construction

MADISON – Madison City Council made it official at its June 12 meeting.

David Jernigan is Police Chief of Madison Police Department. Jernigan had been working as Chief Deputy for Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

Chip Cherry, CEO of Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce, presented a status report to council before receiving the Huntsville chamber’s annual appropriation of $25,000.

Council accepted donations from Sen. Bill Holtzclaw for $4,998 for furniture at Madison Senior Center and for $287.92 to fund a center activity.

Mayor Paul Finley designated the week of June 17-23 as Barbershop Harmony Week and June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Finley also signed a proclamation commending Lincoln Masonic Lodge for its 115th anniversary.

In payment of regular and periodic bills, council approved these larger amounts:

* Holzheimer Bolek & Meehan, architectural and engineering services for Madison Public Library — $13,136.51

* Turner Universal, construction management for Madison Public Library — $34,959.17

* Pearce Construction Co., construction costs, Madison Public Library — $632,074.90

* S&ME, County Line Road, Phase II — $26,593.84

* CDG Engineering; redesign, bid, construction management and utility coordination; Downtown Streetscape, Phase III — $3,556.25

In a first reading, a proposed ordinance would rezone property owned by Kiyo Honma at the southwest corner of Roy Drive and Slaughter Road from low-density residential to community business district.

The police department was authorized for a grant application for bulletproof vests. The parks and recreation department will enter an agreement with OMI for a geotechnical engineering study for the Dublin Park pool Project; the CIP Budget will fund $5,625 for the work.

Cook’s Pest Control received the contract for Palmer Park concession stands.

The legal department will pursue agreements with Compass Point Planning for updating the sign code and with Madison County for removal of demolition debris.
