Registration opens for youth football, cheer

MADISON – Online registration for Madison Youth Football and Cheer, Madison Knights, will open May 1.

On-site registration will be held at Dublin Park on June 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again on July 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.

New weight restrictions are in use for division assignments. The Tiny Mites football team must be six years old or younger as of July 31 with a maximum weight of 80 pounds. The Might Mites’ age requirement is eight years old or younger by July 31 and a maximum weight of 100 pounds.

Stepping up to the Junior Pee Wee ranks, the child must be 10 years old or younger by July 31 with 120 pounds as top weight. The oldest division will have the 12U – Unlimited who are 12 years and younger by July 31 with weigh at 135 pounds maximum.

All these amounts for maximum weight are ‘unlimited.’

In other guidelines, a coach must evaluate any child younger than five years old before registration to ensure against safety concerns. The maximum dress weight equals the maximum stripped weight plus five pounds of equipment allowance. Coaches must conduct a pregame weight-in before each game.

A restricted weight player is one who exceeds maximum dressed weight and must comply with restrictions before participation. The following guidelines apply to a restricted weight player:

* Can play center, guard and tackle on offense.

* Can play nose guard, tackle and defensive end on defense.

* Can punt or kick extra points and field goals.

* Can play any position on kickoff and kick return.

* The play is ‘dead’ if this player gains possession of the ball.
