MADISON – Kim Lund has won the 2017 Alabama Volunteer of the Year Award for the United States Tennis Association.

Lund received her award at the 2017 USTA Alabama annual meeting at Vestavia Country Club in February. USTA Alabama’s mission is “To Promote and Develop the Growth of Tennis.” (alabamata.usta.com/award).

“At first, I thought it was a mistake,” Lund said about winning. “I’m just one of so many Huntsville Women’s Tennis Association volunteers who work so hard to ensure every tournament is a success. The award was for Southern Senior Cup and from Southern Section,” she said.

Lund was born into a “tennis family.” Her father was named to tennis halls of fame for North Carolina and Southern Section. “Two of my siblings played in college. My younger sister and I both play USTA,” Lund said.

Although she played as a child, Lund gave up the sport when her family moved to Massachusetts when she was in junior high. “I didn’t play again until I moved here with my husband and kids,” she said. “You can play all year around here. It’s truly is a game for life.”

“I have made so many wonderful friends playing tennis,” Lund said. “I hope to play for many, many more years.”

A Madison resident for 20-plus years, Lund was recognized as 2016 Staff Member of the Year at Bob Jones High School. “At the same time I received this award, I also retired after 19 years at Bob Jones. It was a memorable day,” Lund said. She worked as resource room facilitator for the Special Education Department.

In addition, Lund is a Stephen Minister, a layperson trained to give one-to-one care to people experiencing difficulties, such as grief, divorce, job loss or illness. (stephenministries.org). Stephen Ministries, a not-for-profit Christian education organization, was founded in 1975 to produce training and resources for outreach.

Kim’s husband Chris works for Department of Defense as an IT Program Manager.

Their daughter Amanda Bevel of Huntsville works as General Manager of Edgar’s; Amanda and husband Andrew are parents of June Greer, 2.5 years old, and 15-month-old Marion. Their son Chris works as Marketing Manager for Madison Chamber of Commerce. Their daughter Julia Perman of Birmingham works as Senior Consultant for Dell; Julia’s husband Seth works for Trustmark Bank.

Although she ‘officially’ retired from Bob Jones, Kim doesn’t feel like she has reached that milestone. “I still work three days a week for Madison City Schools and two days watching the grandchildren. I’m busy with three tennis teams, involved with Stephen Ministry at Asbury United Methodist Church, and, of course, volunteering with the Southern Senior Cup in May,” she said.
