Downtown library ‘raises the B.A.R.’ for black history
HUNTSVILLE – Huntsville-Madison County Public Library plans to “Raise the B.A.R.” (Black American Renaissance) at the Downtown Huntsville Public Library, 915 Monroe St. in Huntsville.
Raise the B.A.R. will be the library’s finale event for Black History Month observances. Librarians have coordinated activities related to African-American experiences from periods of slavery through current day.
The public is invited to the free finale on Feb. 25 from 3 to 8:30 p.m.
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History selected “The Crisis in Black Education” as the 2017 black history theme, focusing on education’s crucial role in the history of African-Americans.
“We give kids the tools, skills and knowledge to have great potential out in the world as educated people. But many times we fall short of inspiring them to use the education they’ve attained to leave a positive and influential mark on society,” Courtney Braggs said. Braggs is chairperson of the library system’s Black History Month committee.
During February, librarians have sought to promote better literacy and education for area youth. They presented activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, related to African-American innovators, thought-leaders and pioneers in history.
From 5 to 8:30 p.m., the event’s focus will shift to more adult programming. Community partners, vendors and light refreshments will be available.
STEAM activities will entertain and educate youth and families:
* “Hidden Figures” scavenger hunt.
* Inventor’s activity table.
* Music and visual arts projects remembering Louis Armstrong.
* Mancala board game (believed to be the oldest game in the world).
* Hands-on activity based on Dr. Charles Drew’s discoveries in storing and processing blood for transfusions.
* Building station based on architect Norma Merrick Sklarek’s architectural accomplishments.
At 5:10 p.m., a press conference with Rep. Laura Hall will recognize her donation of almost 100 copies of the book, “Seeds of Freedom,” to area schools and libraries. A tribute to Sonnie Hereford and moment of silence in his honor is scheduled at 5:30 p.m.
An interactive crowd dance with Neema Performing Arts, Oakwood Academy Choir and praise performances will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. Then, the winner of Optimist Club of Huntsville’s essay contest will read on “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges.”
