Liz Hurley Ribbon Run slots filling fast
HUNTSVILLE – Only days remains until entrants cross the “Start” line for the 13th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run, which benefits the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
The annual event gives an opportunity to the community to work together in fighting breast cancer, Lindsey Wilson said. Wilson works as Director of Marketing for Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
The Liz Hurley Ribbon run will start at 8 a.m. on Oct. 15 at Huntsville Junior High School, 817 Adams Ave. Less than half of the 2016 Ribbon Run spots are remaining, with hundreds of participants registering each day, Wilson said.
To register, visit lizhurleyribbonrun.org. The race is limited to 6,500 runners. The one race includes men and women. Online registration closes at 5 p.m. on Oct. 10.
This year, race proceeds will be used to purchase a biopsy system for use in conjunction with 3-D mammography that allows radiologists to perform 3-D tomo-assisted breast biopsies. Proceeds also will provide another ultrasound machine to enhance the Huntsville and Madison Breast Center’s screening capabilities.
The race was founded by WAFF-48 news anchor Liz Hurley who, in 1998, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The disease had taken her mother when Liz was a child. Liz received extensive chemotherapy and underwent a double mastectomy.
In 1999, Hurley established the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation and became a powerful advocate for breast cancer awareness and early detection of the disease.
The run started as a small event in 2004 with about 1,000 participants has become the largest 5K race in North Alabama with an expected 6,500 participants.
The Ribbon Run includes a 5K race and a Survivors’ Walk. Individuals can buy a luminaria for $10 online or from the foundation office at 256-265-8077.
Established in 1978, Huntsville Hospital Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that serves as the hospital’s fundraising arm. The foundation accepts gifts, both individual and corporate, on the hospital’s behalf and works to fund present and future equipment and program needs.
