Major (Ret.) Lynn C. Vanderberg October 13, 1944 – May 16, 2016

Major (Ret.) Lynn C. Vandeberg, 71, passed away in Madison, AL, on May 16, 2016. Lynn was born on October 13, 1944 in Chicago, IL, to Chester and Edna Vandeberg. In 1966, he joined the United States Air Force attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1967, he transferred to the United States Army and completed both Signal Officer basic and advanced courses. He retired in 1983 at the rank of Major. After his military career, he worked for Boeing, RJR Nabisco, Altria and Electronic Data Systems.
Lynn served two tours in Vietnam and throughout his military career earned several decorations and awards including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Vietnam Technical Service Honor Medal (First Class), Republic of Vietnam Signal Corps Badge (Honorary), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Oversea Service Ribbon (2), Army Service Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Unit Commendation (3), and Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. He also was awarded expert marksmanship badges for the rifle and pistol.
Lynn received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha and a Master of Science degree from the Southeastern Institute of Technology.
Lynn traveled the world during his military and civilian careers. His military assignments included Vietnam, Germany, and Kwajalein. He frequently enjoyed touring eastern and western Europe; where he applied his love of photography. Lynn always supported the Chicago Bears and Blackhawks and especially cheered for his beloved Chicago Cubs (annually proclaiming that this was going to be the year). Lynn was a long time resident of Wilkes-Barre, PA where he developed many lifelong friendships. He recently relocated back to the Huntsville area to spend time with his grandchildren and enjoyed supporting the Huntsville Havoc hockey team and the Bob Jones High School Marching Band. Lynn was known to be empathetic and generous to others in need, offering his support and assistance however he could.
He is survived by two sons, Kevin (Jodi) of Madison, AL and Keith (Wendy) of Mountain Top, PA; two grandsons Grey and Max; nephew David; and niece Wendy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline; and his sister, Shirley.
Visitation with the family took place at Laughlin Service Funeral Home on Sunday, May 22nd, at 2:00 p.m. a memorial service followed at 3:00 p.m. The service will be officiated by Deacon Greg Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
