Hundreds attend Memorial Day ceremony

MADISON – Hundreds of residents dressed in the patriotic colors of red, white and blue attended the 2016 Memorial Day Ceremony, sponsored by American Legion, Post 229 of Madison.

The event was held in Veterans Park on the Village Green along Front Street.

Madison Community Band (MCB) performed “Armed Forces Salute,” “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Taps” and “Carlisle March.” Rocket City Chorus and Southern Splendor Chorus sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”

Retired Colonel Larry Vannoy welcomed the audience. Students in Army Junior ROTC Color Guard from James Clemens High School presented “Posting of the Colors.”

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Dewey Cockman, Chaplain for Post 229, gave the invocation. Cherish Croft with Post 229 read “In Flanders Field.” Legionnaire Lawrence Frakes recited “Duty, Honor, Country” with MCB playing in the background.

Mayor Troy Trulock offered his remarks. James Vance, 1st Vice Commander with Post 229, introduced Col. John Kuenzli, who presented “What Memorial Day Means to Me.”
