Liberty students consider jobs, career paths
MADISON – From consultants to cooks and historians to healthcare workers, approximately 60 local professionals explained their jobs during Career Day at Liberty Middle School on March 11.
“Presenters represented a wide variety of career fields, and they led interest groups in discussions on their profession or area of expertise. Students chose the sessions they wanted to attend,” John S. Peck said. Peck is Public Relations Manager for Madison City Schools.
In Ray Bernal’s classroom, students learned about working to bolster cyber security and computing studies from Nisheeth Agrawal, professor at Calhoun Community College. Barbara Brown invited Kari Hawkins, who works as Public Affairs Journalist with Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) on Redstone Arsenal.
“The K9 unit with Madison Police Department put on a demonstration on the Liberty baseball field,” Peck said. A rescue group for small dogs attended Career Day and brought dogs for adoption. Liberty students also petted a dog and horse that a veterinarian for large animals brought to campus.
Tamara Myhan, an athletic trainer with Huntsville Hospital/The Orthopedic Center spoke to students, thanks to Liberty nurse Benita Tunstill and teacher Fran Cornelison. In Ashley Avans’ room, Dr. Dane Bagley with Perfect Optical Eye Care explained the job demands of an optometrist.
Dustin Timbrook, who works as Artist and Creative Director for Red Brick Industries, met with students in Sarah Baker’s classroom. Rocket scientist Allison Durrett told about her work duties on Redstone Arsenal to Rhonda Durrett’s students.
Rebecca Wynn, who works as a nuclear operations support specialist, visited Tammy Fiscus’ students. Attorney Matt Balch, who currently practices at his firm at 106 Main St. in Madison with plans to move to Martin Street, talked about his workday.
In Brandi Glenn’s room, Shavita Wood discussed her work as Nutrition Consultant with Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Tiffany Green, Enrollment Services Manager with J.F. Drake State Community & Technical College, spoke to Bess House’s students.
Amber Merrill’s students assembled at the football stadium to watch NASA Computer Engineer Garrick Merrill fly drones.
