Registration open for City Chess Championship
MADISON – The first annual City Chess Championship for Madison now has a new section for competition.
“It is time for your kids to register for the Open Section of the City Chess Championship,” Ranae Bartlett said. Bartlett serves as Executive Director of Madison City Chess League.
“This Open Section tournament occurs alongside the Invitational Section of the City Chess Championship where up to 10 students qualified in their sections throughout the year,” Bartlett said.
The Open Section “extends the opportunity for all Madison students to play in a tournament with longer time controls (Game 90/d5),” Bartlett said. “The Open Section uses the same time controls as the Invitational Section.”
Competing in the Open Section can be a major benefit to students who plan to compete at one or more of the upcoming national scholastic chess tournaments. In these tournaments, the game time lasts two hours per side.
Open Sections have divisions for kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grades and seventh through twelfth grades.
Mei Wei caterers will offer a lunch plate for $5 for guests and competitors. Vegetarian options will be available.
“Playing in a local tournament with longer time controls will help your kids become accustomed to playing longer games,” Bartlett said. “Or, if your kids cannot travel to compete at nationals, this (venue) will give them an opportunity to experience the longer game times that others will have the opportunity to play at nationals.”
The first round starts on March 25 at 6 p.m. at Bob Jones High School. The remaining three rounds are scheduled for March 26.
At the end of the event, winners in the Open Section and Invitational Section will receive awards. The city tournament is an individual event only; teams will not receive awards.
