Lee Greenwood entertains for SuperCitizens

MADISON – Almost 1,000 Madison fifth-graders experienced a testament to patriotism when Lee Greenwood performed during Liberty Learning Foundation’s launch of its SuperCitizens program.
During SuperCitizens sessions, Madison students learn the value of American citizenship, appreciation of freedoms, kindness and service to others. They also study civics, character traits and financial literacy.
Greenwood, a Grammy Award winner for his music, sang his world-famous anthem, “God Bless the U.S.A.,” for the audience that gathered in Zompa Auditorium at Bob Jones High School on Jan. 22.
“We were so fortunate to meet Lee Greenwood this past summer. As you know, he has such a love for our country and for all of the men and women that serve in our military,” Barbara Sumner said. Sumner is Liberty Learning’s Director of Public Affairs.
“We told Lee Greenwood about what we do at the foundation and how we impact students’ lives. His response was incredible. He loves what we do and wanted to show his support in such a big way,” Sumner said.
Opening the program, Dr. Daphne Jah, West Madison Elementary School Principal, sang a rousing rendition of “The National Anthem.” Libby Liberty, a ‘living’ version of the Statue of Liberty, animated the crowd and built excitement. Choirs from Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools joined Greenwood in vocalizing his signature song.
Following the 45-minute program, Greenwood greeted special guests in a private reception hosted by Madison County Commission Chairman Dale W. Strong. The commission assisted in arranging for Greenwood’s visit.
