MADISON – On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the city’s largest gathering of chess players will convene at Mill Creek Elementary School for the Queen’s Quest Chess Tournament.

Queen’s Quest on Nov. 21 is the second qualifier contest for the Madison City Scholastic Chess Championship in March 2016. “Queen’s Quest will be a chess extravaganza,” Ranae Bartlett said. Bartlett serves as Executive Director of Madison City Chess League.

“It will be a very fun tournament. Mill Creek Principal Carmen Buchanan is working with us to plan the best Queen’s Quest yet,” Bartlett said.

Queen’s Quest will offer the season’s first team events and recognize the top five teams in K-3 and K-6 sections, top three teams for K-9 and top two for K-12.

Deadline for mail-in entries is Nov. 13. Deadline for online registration is Nov. 19. Late registration will requier a first-round 1/2-point bye.

“We’re splitting the Individual K-6 section by adding a category for grades 4-6 rated Under 500 (4-6 Under 500),” Bartlett said about a few provision. “K-6 has been the largest single section of local, state and national tournaments. It was time to divide that section to make that section manageable and the pairings more meaningful.”

In addition, female students with the highest score but without placing otherwise will receive a “Top Female” medal.

“Also new, Madison City Chess League will offer player pairings online so everyone doesn’t have to rush to a posted pairing sheet to find out who they are playing next,” Bartlett said. “Given the anticipated turnout, we want to reduce the hectic nature of posted pairings and getting everyone to their next round in as calmly as possible.”

Queen’s Quest will have food trucks that offer barbecue, Stevie B’s pizza, desserts and sno-cones. A gourmet hot chocolate bar, craft room for younger children and a “pamper-me room for nail and eye makeovers and chair massage,” will make this chess tournament unlike any other, Bartlett said.

Tournament contestants must hold United States Chess Federation membership.
