Historical society helps with MSF, stroll
MADISON – Madison Station Historical Preservation Society members are volunteering their time for community events during October.
At the Madison Street Festival on Oct. 3, society members will be stationed near the Roundhouse on Front Street. Commemorative brick pavers will be sold for $35 each.
In addition, homeowners in the historic district can sign up for “Front Porches of Madison” in December. The Roundhouse will be open to offer the history of Madison in visual displays, books and other materials.
“We hope people will notice Madison Belles in the Madison Street Festival Parade,” belles coordinator Suzanne Wellborn said. “They’ll be wearing traditional Southern dresses, broad-brimmed hats and carrying their parasols just as any Southern lady should.”
In another project, members will assist with the Madison City Historical Cemetery Stroll on Oct. 4 at Old Madison Cemetery on Mill Road. In preparation for the stroll, they helped with a cleanup day at the cemetery on Sept. 26.
Tickets for the Historic Madison Christmas Magic Homes Tour 2015 will go on sale for $15 on Nov. 11 at Whistle Stop Sweet Shop, Madison Station Antiques and Main Street Cafe. Proceeds will benefit projects in the Madison historic district. Sponsors are Opie Balch Realty and Madison Station Antiques.
Society volunteer Erica Hand is coordinating Front Porches of Madison in conjunction with the homes tour. Historic district homeowners are encouraged to decorate and spotlight their front porches throughout the month of December.
“We want to share our historic district porches with visitors, not only for Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Christmas Magic Homes Tour 2015 but all through December,” Hand said. To contact Hand, call 256-348-4292 or email to ericahand@att.net.
The society’s next meeting will be held at the Roundhouse on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Prospective members are welcome. New members are encouraged to join Madison Station Historical Preservation Society for $20 for an individual or $25 for a family.
