Girls’ chess plans schedule
MADISON – After launching in June, Girls’ Chess Night will adjust with a few changes for the start of school.
“Taziki’s will continue to sponsor the summer edition of Girls’ Chess Night, but after taking off in August, we will move to International House of Pancakes (IHOP) at 8622 U.S. 72 NW during the school year,” Ranae Bartlett said.
Bartlett serves as executive director of Madison City Chess League.
Taziki’s will sponsor Spirit Night for the league on Aug. 4, the night before school starts, from 5 to 8 p.m. “The first Tuesday of the month is also ChessKid Night, so kids bring your iPads or tablets on Aug. 4 and play Fast Chess games online while you eat,” Bartlett said.
“There’s a social dimension to Girls’ Chess Night that differs from other activities hosted by the league, “Bartlett said. “The girls enjoyed just catching up and being together to talk and play chess.”
The league board of directors has appointed Beena Chopade as girls’ chess coordinator. Chopade has twin daughters who attend Columbia Elementary School and play chess competitively. “Beena will help coordinate and lead activities to grow the number of girls playing chess, including Girls’ Chess Night,” Bartlett said.
On July 20 during girls’ night, International Master Danny Rensch played three games against teams while he was blindfolded. Rensch called out his moves, and the girls conferred and then called their moves. Rensch won games with all three teams.
On Sept. 1, Girls’ Chess Night will resume at IHOP from 6 to 7:30 p.m. “This location during the school year and competition chess season will enable the girls to receive some instruction and practice their chess skills in a back room separate from the main area of the restaurant,” Bartlett said.
Girls’ Chess Night will not meet during December, but Taziki’s will host Spirit Night for the league on Dec. 14. Girls’ Chess Night will return to Taziki’s in summer 2016.
