MADISON – James Clemens High School Band members will take instructions from not one but three drum majors this year.

The 2015 drum majors are Laurianna Beibide, Justin Locke and Isabelle Spence.

Locke learned to play tuba for a different experience and found it “extremely engaging.” Initially, he didn’t realize the required time, practice and commitment.

“I’m more then glad I learned because it has proven to be a bunch of fun and has provided me so many opportunities and many more to come,” he said.

He auditioned for drum major to serve his “peers to the best of my ability and make them feel appreciated. I want this ensemble to reach its fullest potential. I always need to set the example for what is right and consistently have a positive attitude,” he said.

Justin’s parents are Christopher and Heidi Locke.

Spence had wanted to play flute and piccolo since she first heard the instrument in Kindermusik classes. She loved its sound.

As drum major, she wants to help her fellow band members “to be the best they can be. The most difficult aspect will be performing in front of so many people.”

Isabelle participates in French Club and track and field. Her parents are Patrick and Nancy Spence.

Beibide joined band in middle school because her mother insisted. “Not my choice … but it was the best thing to happen to me. I can’t imagine quitting,” she said.

Beibide always has admired drum majors as role models “of how to act and what to strive for. I wanted to make someone else feel the same way. I want to make the biggest difference I can in my last year at James Clemens.”

As drum major, Beibide will face challenges “with confidence and do everything in my power to resolve them,” she said.

A clarinetist, Beibide participates with Student Government Association, Math Honor Society and Student Ambassadors. She has a 4.8 GPA. Her parents are Victor and Lisa Beibide.

This summer, Beibide, Locke and Spence attended George Parks Drum Major Academy in Tuscaloosa.
