MADISON – For the last time, Joy Brindley has signed off in email and correspondence as “Joy in the Gym.” She has retired as physical education teacher at West Madison Elementary School.

Since she was six years old, Brindley has played tennis. She likes mountain biking, hiking, water and snow skiing, yard work, walking her dog and yoga.

Brindley earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Alabama and a master’s degree at Alabama A&M University. Her career accomplishments include 1998 “Teacher of the Year,” Earth Day chairman for 15-plus years and committee advisor for professional development, character education, beautification, safety and extended day.

“I enjoyed teaching and sharing healthy lifestyles with everyone,” Brindley said. “I loved the friendships that we shared.”

While Brindley will miss those people most, she also will miss activities at West Madison, like the “Jump Rope For Heart” campaign and fundraiser, Monday morning assemblies, Accelerated Reading (AR) programs, PTA meetings, choir programs, field days and yoga classes.

Brindley organized the West Madison Juggling Team. After a “juggling unit,” students can try out but must maintain good grades and behavior. They master three basic patterns and complete 20-25 consecutive catches.

Who is Brindley’s favorite teacher from her years in school? “My second-grade teacher was the kindest and most caring teacher I had. I will always remember her for that,” Brindley said.

For her successor, Brindley suggests this person “work with a passion and love for your job. West Madison is a great place to work. Be grateful every day.”

Brindley now will be moving to Pensacola, Fla. to work with her brother and support her niece. “I want to work less and play more. I want to serve God in another career.”

“I want to follow God’s purpose for my life. I do feel that I’ve done that for the past 27 years,” she said. “I’m now going to do that in another place. God speed to everyone who has been a part of my life in Madison, Alabama. I love this town!”
