Serving the City as One organizing for April 18
MADISON – Volunteers will take action on April 18 for Serving the City as One 2015.
Serving The City allows churches to unite in community service for projects that demonstrate Christ’s love and build bridges to the community, Madison hub chairman Larry Ward said.
In Madison, on-site check-in begins at 8:15 a.m. at CrossPointe Church, 78 Hughes Road.
Volunteers can choose two options. “We plan strategically for multiple projects and locations around town and advertise to volunteers about the different areas in which we need help,” Ward said.
“We’ve learned through many years of ministry to the community that God always provides the right number of volunteers to complete the projects,” Ward said.
Deadline for signup is April 6 at midnight. To register, visit signupgenius.com/go/20F0845A8AE2BA5F49-serving.
Ward highlighted three projects for 2015. The ARC of Madison County will have its shredder truck at Bob Jones High School’s northeast parking lot for free document shredding from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In cooperation with Society of St. Andrew, a “crop drop” of fresh vegetables or fruit “will be bagged for donation to feeding agencies for families who need a food boost,” Ward said. “Last year, we had 20,000 pounds of apples to bag and distribute.”
A third special project is a community lunch fellowship hosted by Restoration Church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome for “a block party atmosphere of celebration with music and inflatables for the children,” Ward said.
Other project examples are prayer team leaders and walkers; helping with the community lunch; construction projects for ramps, home repairs and power washing; environmental improvements like mulching and painting; packing and delivery; free car washes, giveaways, oil changes and cleaning; ministry to nursing homes; and baking treats before the event.
In 2014, 214 volunteers with representation from 14 churches completed 22 projects.
Other hub sites are Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 315 Winchester Road; First Baptist Church, 600 Governors Drive; and Willowbrook Church, 7625 Bailey Cove Road.
