Bob Jones lauds athletes with top GPAs
MADISON – Each fall, Principal Robby Parker at Bob Jones High School takes pride in announcing the sports teams and individuals who have compiled the highest GPAs (grade point averages) for the first nine weeks.
“Students at Bob Jones are aware that its foundation, and that of the Madison City Schools district as a whole, is built on academics,” Parker said. “The Class of 2014 at Bob Jones received over $30 million in scholarships.”
In addition, the school “had a banner year signing athletes to scholarships with 41 signees,” Parker said. “Even with that, 97 percent of the $30 million was from the academic program. I am very proud of all of our athletes and students for their continued diligence in their academic pursuits.”
For Fall 2014, the Patriots Volleyball team won the Fall Sports Team GPA Award. “This honor is based on varsity players in grades 9-12 on averages for the first nine weeks,” Parker said.
Volleyball players topped the athletes with a team average of 4.23. Other teams in order of grades are girls swimming, 4.10; girls cross-country, 4.06; boys swimming, 3.89; competition cheer, 3.84; boys cross-country, 3.75; and football, 3.19.
Individual athletes in each sport with the highest GPA also were commended. Among volleyball players, Melaina Hissam has the top GPA at 4.75. Meenakshi Bhooshanan has earned a 4.75 GPA to be tops on the girls swimming team.
For girls cross-country, Lillie Robinson had the top average with 5.00. Among the boy swimmers, Byron He also earned a 5.00 GPA. Serena Bukovac’s 4.50 GPA was highest among the competition cheer squad.
Daniel Gunther was the top in academics among boys in cross-country with a 5.00 GPA. For football, Derek Marion’s 4.75 GPA was the leader.
At its meeting on Nov. 6, Madison Board of Education recognized the student athletes for their work ethic.
