MADISON – Ange Long at Discovery Middle School is a first-place winner in the National Poison Prevention Week art contest.

Long topped entries for the grades 6-8 division. The council will distribute posters with Long’s artwork to schools, physicians’ offices and public agencies across the country.

“I wanted to spread awareness about how it’s important to keep children away from chemicals and other dangerous products, like prescription medicines and cleaning chemicals,” Long said about entering the contest.

Her winning artwork depicts a curious girl reaching for a prescription pill bottle belonging to an adult. “I didn’t want to focus on the negative side of poison prevention, like after someone’s been in contact with poison, but the positive side, like how you can prevent poisoning,” Long said.

Long acknowledged Discovery art teacher Raquel Spiegel for “expanding my knowledge of different ways of making art and using different materials. She is a very encouraging teacher. Mrs. Spiegel always sees the best in everyone and has taught me to use my talents to my advantage.”

At Discovery, Long has participated with the math, soccer and basketball teams, National Junior Honor Society, along with the cross-country team at Bob Jones High School.

An ‘A’ honor roll student, Long earned the 2014 Principal’s Award and honorable mention by the Alabama Music Teachers Association for three years and its design contest in 2010. She volunteers at Huntsville Botanical Garden and as a math tutor.

“I’ve just passed my referee test for AYSO soccer. I’m going to referee some AYSO games,” Long said.

Her parents are Yingtian Long and Ruli Chang. Ange has one older brother, Patrick Y. Long. For hobbies, Ange enjoys creating art at home, playing piano, ‘hanging out’ with friends and reading.
