Board approves Roberts as Liberty assistant principal
MADISON – Madison Board of Education has hired Dr. Kary Roberts as assistant principal at Liberty Middle School.
For 13 years, Roberts taught with Etowah County Schools in Gadsden and Rainbow City middle schools and science at West End High School in Walnut Grove. She also sponsored sports teams and extracurricular activities.
Roberts advocates educators as lifelong learners and has trained teachers for the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) and is certified with Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI), distance learning and other innovative programs.
Roberts is a successful grant writer, an ARI Renaissance Model and Master Educator and a former Teacher of the Year.
At Liberty, Roberts’ goal is “to live this opportunity to the fullest and learn everything I can. The administration, faculty, and staff have continually amazed me and have been so openhearted and friendly.”
She will work with Liberty’s instructional team “to continue (existing) top-notch instruction”, develop professional learning, work with the special education department and collaborate with universities for student teachers.
During childhood, Robert’s most influential teacher was never her ‘assigned’ teacher but engenders an image of “a successful educator” who still works after 37 years in education.
This special education teacher took food to hungry children, had a “safe-place” for children to wash up and bought clothes for children to wear while she washed dirty clothing at home. After school, the teacher gave free haircuts and tutoring.
“Her name is Trudy Luken, and she is my mother,” Roberts said. Many adults return to visit her mother and acknowledge her impact. “It always makes her cry. She’s my hero.”
Roberts earned a bachelor’s degree at Jacksonville State University. At the University of Alabama, she received a master’s degree, education specialist certification and a doctorate’s degree in secondary curriculum and instruction.
Her husband John owns an auto-body repair business. They live in New Union. Their children are Cleary, 22, Jacksonville State University senior; Collyn, 19, JSU sophomore; T.J., 19, drummer with the Brooke Danielle Band; and Cale, 15, West End High School sophomore.
