MADISON – Accomplished artist Heather Baumbach shares her talent with community theater, festivals and as an entrepreneur.

“I’m thrilled to do costume design for Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theatre’s fall show, ‘The Neverending Story.’ Costumes (have) elements of puppetry, fabric dyeing and painting on a large scale. It’s a wonderful design challenge, especially since the movie is well known,” Baumbach said.

Baumbach works as an independent design professional. She has designed for Renaissance Theatre, Ovation Arts and Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. For five years, she worked with contemporary worship services at Asbury United Methodist Church and managing events for The Arts Council.

Her art interest started in high school. However, “the driving force was my mom taking me to New York to see Broadway shows and window designs at stores like Lord & Taylor and Macy’s,” Baumbach said.

“Pieces of my artistic puzzle came together in college. I majored in costume design and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. (Go Pickles!),” she said.

“I can’t think of a medium in art I would be afraid to try,” she said. Her experience includes two-dimensional art, sculpture, textiles, graphic design, along with film, drama, stop-action animation, photography, screen-printing, airbrush and digital art.

She works with wood, acrylics, ink, watercolor and with textiles.

“As an artist, I take as much time as necessary to complete a piece. I don’t watch a clock; I like to watch the work develop,” Baumbach said.

Baumbach has exhibited her artwork at The Art Stroll, Art 4 Paws, Sam and Greg’s, Whistle Stop Sweet Shop, Greene Street Market and the Artery. Her schedule includes shows in Atlanta, Dalton, Ga., Rosemary Beach, Fla. and Madison Street Festival.

“My hometown, Allentown, Pa., holds many childhood memories … the same type of memories we’re having with our children in Alabama,” she said. She and husband John, who works for a defense contractor, have lived 10 years in Madison.

Their children are Sydney, 11, Marjorie, 9, and Jack, 8.
