MADISON –  Zach Holcomb, who will be a freshman at James Clemens High School in August, has completed all requisite work to reach the rank of Eagle Scout.

His parents, Shawn and Hope Holcomb, actively encouraged Zach to work for the award. “While it was a lot of work, it looked like a lot of fun, too,” Zach said.

“I have spent most of my life here in Madison but was born in Prescott, Ariz. and moved to Houston, Texas before moving to Madison,” Zach said. He attended Heritage and Mill Creek elementary schools and Liberty Middle School.

Zach was a member of the Liberty Lions Band and earned two medals and a trophy for his musicianmanship.

For his service project to earn Eagle status, Zach made three orienteering courses and one practice orienteering course at a local youth camp. He also helped with preparing an updated map for the camp.

Work for this project required Zach and his crew to use a router, posthole diggers and some augers. Several of Zach’s fellow scouts in Troop 7676 helped with the work. “John Fellows helped quite a bit,” Zach said. James Mulberry is his troop leader.

“The total man hours at the end were about 130 hours,” Zach said.

“Before I started work on the project, several people were wanting an orienteering course at the camp. A lot of those people have given me compliments on it,” Zach said.

His parents and Shawn and Hope Holcomb. He works as a systems engineer at NASA, while Hope is a stay-at-home mom. Zach’s sisters are Ranoah and Skylah, both students at Mill Creek Elementary School.

The Holcombs moved to Madison in 2006 when Shawn secured a new job here.

Zach and other Scouts from Madison received their Eagle commendations at a Court of Honor at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 18.

The Holcomb family attends The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints.
