James Clemens students recognized across disciplines at Awards Night

MADISON – The Jets’ brightest colors shone on Awards Night at James Clemens High School on May 12.

“We celebrated those students who were outstanding contributors to James Clemens by grades, community service, volunteerism and extra-curricular activities,” Class of 2014 counselor Lana Meskunas said.

Awards Night recognizes National Merit and National Achievement Finalists, seniors with military appointments and accepted academic and athletic scholarships from colleges, universities and the community.

Lakshmi Subramani received the Mayor’s Award for Scholastic Excellence, Science Award and was named Senior Student of the Year by the administration and faculty’s vote.

Patrick Murphy and Elijah Teixeira received appointments to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Johsias Hussen earned the Quest Bridge Scholarship.

“Parents enjoyed seeing their students’ picture displayed on lobby monitors,” Meskunas said. Student Ambassadors escorted guests to their seats. “Our choir students’ angelic voices carried the ‘National Anthem.'”

Junior ROTC presented the colors. Kelli Nichols served as emcee. James Clemens Band entertained the audience.

Andrew Pokemire received a four-year Army ROTC scholarship to the University of North Alabama. Marine Corps awards went to Alexander Black and Alexa Wade, Distinguished Athlete; Alexander King and Chelsea Alvarado, Scholastic Excellence; and Emily Wittig, Musical Excellence.

National Merit Finalists are Katrina Avery, Alexander Black, Madeline Johnson, Rebecca Odum, Rahul Rameshbabu and Brendan Romanczuk. Alexa Wade is a National Achievement Finalist.

Community scholarship winners are Nhi Pham, Junior League of Huntsville; Camrin Bowens, Diamond Book; Jonathan Shoulders, Joe L. Fletcher Scholarship; Matthew Herrell, Huntsville/Madison County Builders Foundation; Cameron Boyd and Makaila Hogan, Madison City Council of PTAs; Michael Resnick, Masonic Lodge; Peter Jackson, Miranda Bouldin Essay; Katrina Avery and Jayce Hampton, Nucor Steel; Joy Gullo, Regions Riding Forward, Andrew Pokemire, Redstone Arsenal Community Women’s Club; and Joy Gullo, PTSA.

James Clemens award winners are Sara Lauderdale, career technical; Allyson Mancuso, English language arts; Matthew Herrell, Kayla Jackson and Emily Wittig, fine arts; Matthew Kucera, mathematics; Kylie Malone, social studies; and Victoria Bender, world languages.
