MADISON – Alexandra ‘Sasha’ Dison is back at home where she wants to be — with her cats and frogs.

Since May 2011, nine-year-old Sasha has been dealing with Stage 4 rhabdomayosarcoma, a cancer that develops in the body’s connective tissue.

Sasha completed a 54-week treatment plan in August 2012 for tumors in the pelvic region and lungs. In March 2013, she was placed on an experimental treatment.

On April 19, Sasha was transported by ambulance from Huntsville Hospital emergency room to Children’s of Alabama, located in Birmingham. “Scans confirmed her kidneys are full of fluid. Her urethra is blocked by a tumor on her bladder,” family friend and co-worker Beth Mumaw said.

Doctors in Birmingham gave Sasha’s parents, Jonathan and Larissa Dison, the choice to stay at Children’s of Alabama or to go home. “Sasha wanted to come home and be in familiar surroundings,” Mumaw said after visiting the family on Easter.

Jonathan and Larissa have learned how to use a pain pump to keep Sasha comfortable as possible. They also have called hospice services to their home.

Mumaw has worked with Jonathan for 12 years at Sentry Construction. Larissa has taken a leave of absence as sixth-grade teacher at Piney Chapel Elementary School in Limestone County.

Plans are moving forward for “TCP – Sasha’s Way,” a taking-care-of-paws fundraiser that Sasha requested to help sick animals.

Madison Station Bar & Grill, 8694 Madison Blvd. will host TCP – Sasha’s Way on April 29 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and include food and one drink ticket. Dave Anderson with Scott Glennon and Jordan will perform.

This week, Landers McLarty Chevrolet dealership in Huntsville “made a generous donation,” Mumaw said. “We hope people will come for support of this little girl and her dream.”
