Asperger Syndrome center plans Open Mic Night

(CONTRIBUTED)

MADISON – The Asperger Syndrome (AS) Support, Educate and Advocate (SEA) Beyond Tomorrow center has announced an open call for talent on Open Mic Night.

“We are looking for family-friendly talent for the Open Mic fundraiser on March 7 from 6 to 9 p.m.,” director Angela Collier said. The center’s address is 461 Capshaw Road, Suite E in Madison.

The AS SEA Beyond Tomorrow center provides a day program for students in grades 5-10 and is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. “We work with home-schooled and schooled students from seven through 50 years old with learning differences, both academically and socially,” Collier said.

For Open Mic Night, the center needs local talent, from dramatic acts, dancers to artists. “Give us a call to set the time. Readings, poetry, instrumentalists, singers, skits and musicians are welcome,” she said.

Guests at the event will enjoy an Italian meal. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years and younger. Event proceeds will help with the center’s operating expenses.

Anyone interested in performing at Open Mic Night can call 256-217-1842.

The AS SEA Beyond Tomorrow center provides services to individuals with auditory processing disorders, Asperger Syndrome and learning differences. Social skills classes also are available.

The center offers “an alternative to situations where students often experience difficulties in large middle and high school settings,” Collier said. “People with Asperger Syndrome are very capable; however, they need smaller group experience and materials presented in different formats.”

Collier defines Asperger Syndrome as one of a group of neurological disorders known as autism spectrum disorders. “Asperger Syndrome is considered to be on the mild end of the spectrum,” she said.
