Rainbow chess players earn first places in Rookie Rally
MADISON – Madison youth expanded their understanding of chess at the Rookie Rally Chess Tournament.
“It was a very exciting weekend on Feb. 1 at Blossomwood Elementary School in Huntsville, site for the Rookie Rally Chess Tournament,” parent volunteer Ranae Bartlett said. A total of 127 children from Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Madison County entered the competition.
“Rainbow Elementary School took home the honor of first-place team in both grades K-3 and K-6 categories,” Bartlett said.
In the individual rankings for grades K-3, Constance Wang was the first-place winner with a perfect score of 5 points. Ethan Kueck won tenth place with 3.5 points.
Other chess players on the K-3 team who contributed to the team score were Zachary Calinsky, Madeline Edwards, Rachael Ehrman, Corinne Wilhelm and Jonathan Yang.
In the individual scoring for the grades K-6 section, students had numerous ties for awards. Michael Guthrie tied for first place with 4.5 points and earned second place in a tie break.
With 4 points, Jenson Wilhelm and Boone Ramsay tied for third place. After the tie break, Wilhem was in fifth place and Ramsay in seventh place.
Students who tied for tenth place with 3 points were Mercedes Zich, Erin Kueck, Jonah Tuttle, Hayden Billmann, Bella Victory-Fox, Maanasi Limaye and Alex Edwards. Other players on the K-6 team were Will Bao, Edward Calinsky, Nacer Harris, Leah Lessmann, Jake Munson and Lucy Ramsey.
“We are very proud of all of the kids who represented Rainbow Elementary and thankful to all the parents for their support,” Bartlett said.
