Columbia, Rainbow math aces rack wins in Muscle Shoals
MADISON – Math aces from Columbia and Rainbow elementary schools proved their skills at the Muscle Shoals Math Tournament on Nov. 2.
“Columbia and Rainbow both placed in the small-school division, because most districts house sixth-graders at middle schools,” Julie Goldston said. Goldston teaches and coaches math at Discovery Middle School.
Columbia and Rainbow fifth-graders captured first and second places, respectively, both in Division 3 competition and among all 12 competing schools, regardless of division.
Columbia fifth-graders winning individual awards were Sahil Gaba, first; Devika Shankar, fourth; and Isaac Wang, sixth. From Rainbow, Nolan Drummond earned second place; Maanasi Limaye, third; and Will Bao, eighth.
Also competing from Columbia were fifth-graders Sarah Cooley, Joshua Murphree and Ria Sethi. The Rainbow teams also included Madeline Dobbs, Ren Ito, Adam Mercier, Nini Nguyen, Quinlyn Scully, Brandon Todd, Emma Tolbert, Tyler Wingard and Jenson Wilhelm.
Sixth-graders mirrored the fifth-grade effort. Columbia and Rainbow won first and second place, respectively, in Division 3. Among 24 sixth-grade teams, Columbia and Rainbow ranked second and third place, respectively.
“Combined, Columbia and Rainbow sixth-graders came home with all Top Ten individual awards,” Goldston said.
