MADISON – Hendryck Gellineau, Sarah Schumacher and Elise Stone are this year’s drum majors for Bob Jones High School Band.

Originally a trumpeter, Schumacher has played French Horn since seventh grade. “There was never any question in my house about learning to play an instrument. My mom was in band throughout college.”

Balancing her friendships in band is Schumacher’s main challenge as drum major. She likes the visual appeal of this year’s field show and “the concept of a show that makes the crowd want to get up and dance,” she said.

She performs in the symphonic band and indoor drumline and participates in Destination Imagination, National Honor Society and Tri-M and science national honor societies.

Schumacher attended Alabama Girls State and Leadership Huntsville-Madison County Connect Class 19. She performed in the University of Alabama Honor Band. Her parents are Julie and Daniel Schumacher.

Gellineau had to choose between band and choir when he moved here. “I picked trombone. It ended up being the greatest decision I ever made.”

As drum major, Gellineau’s “most daunting task is multitasking. Over the years, I have found that being in multiple places at once is not my forte. That’s how a drum major gets things done.”

The field show’s opener, “Good Feelin'” is his favorite part. “It’s just fantastic for our brass section and could be pleasing to anyone’s ears,” Gellineau said.

He participates in track and field. His parents are Antonio Cortes Gellineau and Anne Martyne Gellineau.

Stone wanted to learn to play a musical instrument “because my family is very musical. They all seemed to really enjoy playing instruments.” Her primary instruments are piano and percussion.

“The most difficult aspect of drum major is having to be right all the time because someone is always watching you,” Stone said. She performs with indoor drumline, wind ensemble and concert band and rated a chair in the AllState Band.

Stone belongs to German Club and the Tri-M Music and German honor societies. Her parents are Jon and Betty Stone.
