MADISON – A faithful volunteer at Madison Public Library will instruct a class on March 22 that will have participants ‘tied up in knots.’

Crystal Kitchens will lead a class in rug braiding on March 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each month, Kitchens teaches classes at the library in subjects that range from weaving baskets to using a triangle loom for shawls and other outerwear.

“Participants will make a braided ‘mug rug’ during the workshop and learn the skills needed to make a braided rug,” Kitchens said. “Your ‘mug rug’ may be continued at home to make a full-size rug.”

The class participants will learn the steps to prepare the fabric strips, how to braid the strips and how to lace the braids into round and oval rugs. “No sewing or braiding experience is needed,” Kitchens said.

“Students should bring firmly woven fabric, such as a sheet, which has been washed and dried, to recycle into their mug rug or full-size rug. Bring a thimble if you need one,” Kitchens said.

Kitchens will bring all tools and other supplies that the class will need to use during the workshop.

The supply fee of $5 includes a “Braidkin” (a flat needle used to lace the braids together), lacing cord and sewing thread.

While in the library, the class participants can browse the shelves for books on rug braiding and other similar art forms, adult services librarian Rachel Hooper said.

The class if open to adults and youth who are at least 14 years old. “Crystal’s classes are always popular with Madison County residents. Her classes usually fill up,” Hooper said. “Bring a sack lunch.”

Space is limited so reservations are required and available online at hmcpl.org/adultcrafts. For more information, call Hooper at 256-461-0046 or email to rhooper@hmcpl.org.
