Madison Academy dominates round two

BY SCOTT WRIGHT / FOR THE RECORD

The Madison Academy Mustangs are treading into rarified territory.

Over the course of the past six weeks, they have completely annihilated their competition, racking up over 50 points multiple times and shutting their opponents out multiple times.

Tonight Madison Academy took care of Plainview 42-7. The first round of the playoffs on Nov. 9 saw the Mustangs take care of Winston County 58-19.

Freshman Malik Miller opened the first offensive possession of each half with big runs and big touchdowns and would finish the night near one hundred yards on the ground.

Sophomore Kerryon Johnson added to his already mind-boggling 1800-plus yards on offense with another 100-yard game and two more touchdowns.

The game, however, can really be described by one set of events. With approximately eight minutes to go in the second quarter, the Plainview offense drove the ball inside the Mustang five yard line and had first and goal to go.

On the first play, the ball moved to the one yard line.

On the second play, an awkward exchange between the quarterback and running back resulted in a loss of two yards.

On the third play, the quarterback stumbled after a play action fake and fell at the five yard line. With five yards to go, trailing by seven points, the Plainview offense would try to convert and fail after a pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

The Mustang offense would take over at their own five yard line, and three plays later, Kerryon Johnson would be standing in the end zone after an incredible 62-yard run.

From that moment on, the Madison Academy players and coaches would never look back. The Mustangs seem poised to continue their success, but it will have to come at the expense of their own region.

The other three teams from Region 8 were about to advance into the third round, creating an odd situation where all four teams from a particular region advanced into the Elite Eight. The Mustangs will be ready for these opponents and will have to beat them a second time to advance any further.
