Mustangs roll on with smashing win

BY SCOTT WRIGHT / FOR THE RECORD

The Madison Academy Mustangs were once again flexing their muscles in their region as they dominated the West Morgan Rebels from the opening kickoff, winning 56-0.

Since losing to Cullman, the Mustangs have defeated their past three opponents by a combined final score of 167-7.

The Mustangs have been able, for the past three weeks, rotate some new faces onto the field and Friday night was no different.

Kerryon Johnson, who has over 900 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns through eight games, did not re-enter the game after playing the first six minutes.

Other starters did not log very many significant moments as they found themselves cheering on their younger teammates for much of the night.

Several players scored touchdowns for Madison Academy, as they raced out to a 49-0 lead at the half.

One familiar face that went in the game on the opposite side of the ball than what fans are used to was Justin Wimberly. The senior quarterback came into the game Friday on the defensive side of the ball and wound up making several key tackles and recovering a fumble in Rebel territory.

Wimberly said “it is good to get a win, especially one that clinches the region for us, but it was also just nice to be out there hitting people again.”

The Mustangs followed the lead of Wimberly and pitched their third shutout of the season.

The Mustangs, already short several major players, took on the Rebel offense and held them to less than 100 yards of total offense.

Next week Madison Academy goes back on the road to play at Colbert County. These final two weeks will be the perfect lead into the Mustangs’ playoff run.
