A group of soccer players from Liberty Middle School raised approximately $8,000 for Relay for Life, a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. “It was a really good time,” said girls soccer coach Michelle Breeden. “The kids had a lot of fun.” The group consists of players from Breeden’s team and boys coach Terry Fuell’s team.
The group raised money by getting sponsors to donate money and selling T-shirts and cookies. The cookies were made by Becca Turner
and were decorated like soccer balls with a heart in the middle of each cookie. The front of the T-shirts say ‘cancer’s biggest enemy’ and the back says ‘me.’
The school also hosted a pajama day to help raise money. “Kids pay like two dollars and they get to wear pajamas to school that are not in dress code,” Breeden said.
This year Relay for Life was held in Madison May 5-6. At the event itself, the group raised about $200. “We had a professional face painter there,” Breeden said. “Her name is Marissa Werr. Also, we raffled off a cookie bouquet by Becca Turner, a local pastry chef.”
“Liberty soccer teams last year decided to put together a Relay for Life team because two of our parents were diagnosed with cancer that very season,” said Breeden. Seth Johnston’s mother Angie Johnston and Rachel Kyle’s mother Nancy Kyle were the two diagnosed with cancer.
“Nancy Kyle is actually one-year cancer free now, said Breeden. “Angie Johnston still has her cancer, but she is doing well. The cancer has shrunk by 70 percent.”
Last year the Liberty soccer teams raised a little over $10,000 for Relay for Life.
