Discovery Middle ‘wishes’ for books

Those wanting to donate can go online to Btsb.com/sosl/discoverymiddleschool to see Discovery’s wish list.

Discovery Middle School has one wish this year and it is to have more library books.

The school is taking part in S.O.S. Library, an extension of the Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. (BTSB) program. The school’s librarians, Missy Jenkins and Debbie Harlow, have compiled a “wish list” of needed books.

“None of the libraries have received funding from the state and local government with all the cuts,” Jenkins said.“ We’re trying to get new books for our kids to read in new ways.”

Jenkins said they chose books based on students’ interests.

“We’re just trying to keep our collection current,” Jenkins said. “We’re not wanting books just to have them out on the shelf, but we want the new releases kids want to read. Some of the books are part of a series. We have the first part, but not the latest.”

The school has around 50 books listed on the BTSB website.

Jenkins said Discovery typically purchases books three to four times. Most recently, the school used money raised from the book fair to purchase new material.

Those wanting to donate can go online to Btsb.com/sosl/discoverymiddleschool to see Discovery’s wish list.

Jenkins said the books from BTSB are made to withstand a large student checkout circulation, so they last longer.

“The easy way to do it is to get it online from BTSB and they would ship it,” she said, “but if they would rather go to a bookstore or donate money, that would be fine.”

Donor nameplates can be customized and inserted in each book selected. The website also shows books that have already been purchased. If making a monetary donation, a minimum of $20 is required.

The school is accepting books all year. If you would like to donate, bring them to the school’s library or visit the site.
