Paws and think about homeless pets

Since the storms in April, animals have been pouring into animal shelters and veterinarian clinics across the state. The Madison Animal Rescue Foundation works with boarders and fosters to help rescue and rehome dogs and cats.

Madison A.R.F. began in Madison in March 2009. Volunteer and Foster Saranne Riccio said since the organization began, it had rescued around 800 animals.

Madison A.R.F. runs strictly off of donations made by the community.

Their mission is to rescue as many homeless animals from Madison as possible and to develop adoption and spay/neuter programs for the city.

Right now, Madison A.R.F. has about 50-60 animals that are being boarded or fostered. Riccio said the average cost to spay and neuter an animal is around $100.

Riccio said she started out fostering dogs when she first heard about Madison A.R.F. She said she never wanted to get too involved, but she couldn’t help it because she fell in love with the organization and the animals.

“Fostering is one of the most rewarding things I’ve done,” Riccio said.

Rufus is one of Madison A.R.F.’s dogs that need a forever home. He has been with Madison A.R.F. for more than a year now.

He is a neutered, potty trained, large Lab/Pit Bull Terrier mix. His favorite pastimes are playing with his favorite toy and his blanket. Rufus loves to run around outside, but also loves to come in and relax afterward.

Aurora and Lottie have been with Madison A.R.F. since they were young mothers. When Madison A.R.F. took them in, they were not in good health. Now, they are thriving with each other.

They are best friends and enjoy playing and sleeping together. They would like a home that could take them both. They are very affectionate, loving and get along well with other cats and dogs.

Madison A.R.F. has had many successes with the pets over the years. One of the most recent was a Doberman named Leon. Leon was taken to a Doberman rescue center in New Hampshire last week. He will be cared for until he finds a loving home.
