Rotary club sponsors weather antennas

(L-R) Dave Frederick, senior Matt Conklin, Rotary Club member Karen Jernigan and club president Dennis Sanders presented a $1,200 donation from the Rotary Club for the installation of an antenna to be used by the BJHS Amateur Radio Club.

Bob Jones recently earned the Stations in Schools grant, which will be used to further the school’s goals.  The grant recognizes the importance of wireless technology and supports the installation of an on-site, school-based weather station.

The grant will provide real-world application and project based assessment students in physics, engineering and astronomy.  The development of this weather station will bring enhanced awareness of the need for wireless technology and help students become more employable, informed, conscientious citizens.

“As we train the work force of tomorrow, these experiences are priceless,” said Julie Finley, assistant principal. “Hands on learning provides the relevance that our students need by allowing them to connect what they are studying in the classroom to upcoming careers.”

Madison City Schools set record “district participation” through ARRL as each school sent a representative to Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) institutes all over the United States.  The funding through ARRL was the first of two grants written by Bob Jones.

The Huntsville Amateur Radio Club in cooperation with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), presented an Amateur Radio Bookshelf to Bob Jones High School for inclusion in the school’s library. The books included in this bookshelf cover diverse topics related to amateur radio, including electronics, amateur radio licensing requirements and satellite communications.

The presentation of these books is part of a continuing project to use amateur radio to supplement curriculum and provide interesting real-world applications for knowledge gained in the classroom.
