Nursing home sells cookbooks

Remember grandma’s signature dish the family used to get together and enjoy? Well, residents at Madison Manor Nursing Home have compiled an entire cookbook chopped full of original and traditional recipes for the Madison community to enjoy.

“It was a lot of fun getting the recipes together and putting it all in a book,” said Nancy Lawler, activities director. “We are aiming for 200 recipes next year.”

As a way to raise money for the activity program, the nursing home is selling the cookbooks for $10 a piece. “Remembered Memories” contains 150 recipes from residents and staff.

Lawler said she and the staff took a risk with the book because they have never attempted anything like it before, nor have they ever had a fundraiser.

“It had its challenges, but it all paid off,” Lawler said. “I am very happy with the final result.”

The 60-page book contains all types of recipes, including soups and beverages. The book even has a “heart healthy” section for those who need recipe substitutions.

She said the money would be used for program activities and to rent a wheelchair accessible van for community trips. She also said part of the proceeds will go to help residents who don’t have family members or money to help with basic needs.

The cost is $10 per book and they can be purchased at Madison Manor Nursing Home, located at 3891 Sullivan Street.

“We definitely encourage people to buy the books and support the residents,” she said.
