Bob Jones fundraiser is community effort
Bob Jones High School, in connection with Woody Anderson Ford of Madison, is holding a Drive One 4 Bob Jones fundraiser to purchase new technology for the Air Force JROTC program and materials for classroom labs.
The fundraiser will be Saturday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the south parking lot at Bob Jones.
The public is invited to test drive the new Ford lineup from Woody Anderson Ford of Madison. Bob Jones will earn $20 for each test drive and could earn up to $6,000 in donations from Ford Motor Company. There is no cost to test drive.
“It’s always a win-win situation when our school works along with our business community,” said Assistant Principal Julie Finley. “We’re also amazed at the amount of community support that comes with it. We encourage our neighbors to come out and drive one for Bob Jones.”
Bob Jones’ Air Force JROTC is hosting the event, with additional volunteers from Student Ambassadors, Student 2 Student Peer Helpers and the cheer team. Rock Band 34/86 is scheduled to perform from noon to 1 p.m.
The fundraiser comes as part of Drive One 4UR School, Ford’s national campaign to help schools raise money to support sports and extracurricular activities.
“Many of our teachers are using this experience to show the relevance of what students are learning in classrooms,” Finley said. “When you look at the research-based Learning Pyramid, only 5 percent of what’s shared through lecture is actually retained, and 30 percent from demonstration, but, when we provide students an opportunity for engagement, retention goes up to 75 percent, or even as high as 90 percent.”
To further explain, Finley said the physical science teacher got students to design airbags to see which design best deflected a falling object. The art classes are discussing visual design. The driver’s ed students are discussing the newly developed vehicle safety features and marketing students are reviewing creative writing for promotional effect.
“Even our anatomy and physiology students are looking at the seating support for the lower lumbar and provide comfort while decreasing fatigue while driving,” she said.“ It’s amazing how many local community events can provide a hands-on relevant experience to our students. We are absolutely thrilled to be the recipients for this.”
