Michael Baranik; Aug. 18, 2010

Retired Chief Petty Officer Michael L. Baranik, 49, of Madison went to be with our Lord Wednesday morning, Aug. 18, after a courageous six-year battle with cancer.

He was a 1979 graduate of Airline High School in Bossier City, La., and earned a bachelor of science degree from Liberty University in 2003.

Chief Baranik served his country with distinction in the U.S. Navy for 24 years in several capacities to include instructor, yard craft boat captain/craftsmaster, and most recently as a drug and alcohol counselor. He was also submarine qualified.

After retirement from the military, Michael continued to serve the needs of others as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor and a part-time minister in Jennings, La. He also established and operated The Shepherd’s House, a faith-based, nonprofit recovery ministry.

Michael was well-known for his strong faith in Jesus, which he shared with all, his desire to help others, and a wonderful sense of humor. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, and mother, Hazel.
