June 29 through October 26 "A Stitch in Time: One Family's Legacy" This extraordinary Victorian Crazy Quilt, a Madison County artifact, made in 1886 by Susie Hobbs Fennell Henderson (1861-1944), was bequeathed to the museum through a descendant's estate. The quilt profiles one Tennessee Valley family and their lineage in North Alabama through initials and other embellishments intricately stitched on colorful swatches of velvet and satin. Family photographs, letters, and didactic panels will provide additional insight into the Hobbs family. Several Hobbs family members will be in attendance for the opening day celebrations, which include a Gallery Walk and reception.
Now through June 15 "Lunch Box Memories" Let us bring back your childhood memories of lunches packed by mom. This exhibition spans the history of the metal lunchbox in American popular culture, beginning with rare examples of illustrated boxes from the turn of the century to the popular art of the illustrated boxes from the post-World War II era. Exhibition organized by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Washington, DC.
Now through June 22 "Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics" Highlighting the Edward and Ann Weston collection of Picasso Edition Ceramics, these 64 ceramic works were created by Pablo Picasso in conjunction with the artisans at the Madoura Pottery Workshop, between 1947 and 1971. The exhibition includes plates, bowls, pitchers, vases, and plaques done in Picasso's signature style, plus vintage posters from Picasso ceramic exhibitions and photographs of the artist at work. The exhibition is organized and circulated by Landau Traveling Exhibitions in Los Angeles, Cal.
Now through July 13 "Encounters: Carlton Nell" Alabama native Carlton Nell's work is comprised of unusually small-scaled paintings that focus on intimate elements from the natural world. The simple backgrounds and exquisitely detailed objects in the foreground offer an extreme contrast within a small space.
Now through September 21 "A Silver Menagerie: The Betty and Charles Grisham collection of Buccellati Animals" Be sure to see these exquisite animals from the Museum's permanent collection. Each of the 16 works was designed and hand fabricated in Italy by the luxury jewelry firm Buccellati and was donated to the Museum by Betty and Charles Grisham. Exhibition Organized by HMA.
Now through October 12 "The Farmer/James Collection of Southern Art (1850-1950)" Capturing the region's rich tapestry of people and places from the 19th and early 20th centuries, the exhibition brings together approximately 50 works from this important Southern Collection.
