Student-led bands sought The Madison Public Library is in search of student-led bands to perform as part of their summer programs for young adults. Students in grades 8-12 are encouraged to apply. All music types are needed: rock, alternative, acoustic, punk, R&B, classical, etc. Performances will be held after library hours and will be open to community teens. Beautify your landscape The City of Madison Beautification Board is looking to judge your landscaping to determine if it measures up for inclusion on the beautification honor roll. The board takes business landscaping as well as subdivision entrances into consideration. Landscape design and maintenance are the key elements, according to board spokesperson Jeanne Steadman. If you would like to participate, call 461-8938. Deadline in mid May and judging will take place during June. There will be an awards luncheon in August.
May 9 Golf tournament Asbury United Methodist Church will host the Asbury Missions Golf Tournament on May 9 at Sunset Landing Golf Course on James Record Road at the Huntsville International Airport. Lunch and registration will at 12 p.m. and tee off will be at 1 p.m. The tournament will be a four-person scramble, $300 per team or $75 per individual, which includes fees and cart. May 10 The Project PROUD organization, will conduct a fund raising event on Saturday, May 10 at Palmer Park. There will be a dunking booth and many other fun activities. Proceeds will go toward renovation of Palmer Park. For more information, call Jane Dow at 461-8181.
Mooresville Walking Tour The Mooresville Walking Tour and Festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 rain or shine from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. There will be nineteenth century crafts and vendors, activities for children, home and garden tours, historic building tours, character actors, story telling, music and food. Admission for adults is $5, children under six free. Discounts are available for bus and tour groups. Proceeds go toward town restoration and preservation. May 12 Madison Dolphins The Madison Dolphins Swim Team is preparing for another winning season. The Dolphins have compiled an unsurpassed record of excellence in age group swimming in Alabama. Along with the coaching staff, which helps swimmers gain strength and endurance, the team members take pride in their community and have a lot of fun throughout the summer. May 17 Cougar Chase 5K Run The third annual Cougar Chase 5K Run will be held Saturday, May 17 at Sparkman Middle School. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. The fee to enter is $10 on or before May 3 and $12 after May 3. Participants will receive a race jacket, t-shirt and refreshments. Art show Several Madison artists will exhibit work at "Artistic Journey 2003," to be presented by adult students of Barbara Miller, May 17 and 18, at the Southerland Station art studios, 402-B Governors Drive in Huntsville. The Madison artists include Tobie Williams, Nancy Graham, Micah Lawrence, Robert Smith, Penelope Prewett and Carol Tillman, a teacher at the Southerland Station studios. Work includes a variety of media, including graphite, ink, colored pencil, acrylics, and oils. Show hours will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is no admission charge.
Dublin Tennis Center grand opening The Dublin Tennis Center grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at Dublin Park in Madison, 8:30-10:30 a.m. There will be a free tennis carnival, which entails clinics and exhibitions, for ages three and up, Little Tennis for ages 3-5, Junior Clinic for ages 6-18 and Adult/Senior Clinic for ages 19 and up. Also, there will be Fast Serve contests for ages 10 and up, and Hit for Prizes for all ages. The event is sponsored by the City of Madison, SportsMed, S&V Sports, State Farm Insurance, YDA, Buffalo Rock-Pepsi, Publix, GTA, ProCourt Construction and USPTA. For more information, call 772-9300.
