Beautify your landscape The City of Madison Beautification Board is looking to judge your landscaping to determine if it measures up for inclusion on the beautification honor roll. The board takes business landscaping as well as subdivision entrances into consideration. Landscape design and maintenance are the key elements, according to board spokesperson Jeanne Steadman. If you would like to participate, call 461-8938. Deadline in mid May and judging will take place during June. There will be an awards luncheon in August.
May 1 National Day of Prayer The National Day of Prayer will be held on Thursday, May 1. A Madison community gathering will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Gazebo in historic downtown Madison. Everyone is welcome to attend the event.
Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity of Madison County and the Huntsville Art League (HAL) are teaming up to celebrate and share an entirely new way of expressing the beauty and love of Habitat. Artists from Hal have taken old windows from the Habitat Restore and transformed them into wonderful works of art. Join us May 1 from 6-8 p.m. at the HAL offices where these treasures will be auctioned off. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door and are available at Habitat and HAL. National Space Society The Alabama Chapter of the National Space Society will sponsor "Spaceship One: Huntsville's Connection to First Private Manned Space Program" by Timothy L. Pickens, propulsion system developer for scaled composites, on Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library auditorium. May 3 WalkAmerica WalkAmerica, a 5-K fun run and 6.2-mile walk fund raising event for the March of Dimes, will occur on Saturday, May 3. The fun begins at 9 a.m. at Heritage Plantation on County Line Road. There will be prizes, refreshments, a SuperSlide, face painting, a rubber ducky race, dancing and music. Registration begins at 8 a.m. There is a $15 minimum donation per entrant. Checks should be made payable to March of Dimes WalkAmerica. For more information, call 532-0500
Kentucky Derby Party Fundraiser The Providence Women's Club of Madison will have its annual Kentucky Derby Party Fundraiser on Saturday, May 3, at the Heritage Plantation Clubhouse on County Line Road. Proceeds will benefit the Madison Public Library and the Madison Fire Department. Corporate sponsorship is being sought now. The party will have celebrity horse races, a silent auction, door prizes, and refreshments. Tickets for the event will be available through club members. For more information, call 890-0798.
May 5 Rediscover Our Historic Neighborhoods The Madison African-American Alliance Group (MAAG) will join thousands of individuals around the country in a nationwide celebration of the 32nd annual National Historic Week, May 5 -12. In Madison, an all-day community event entitled "Restore, Rebuild, Rediscover Our Historic Neighborhoods and Communities" will be held on Monday, May 5, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Madison Municipal Complex. Refreshments will be provided. The event will promote an awareness and understanding of African-American history and heritage, the importance of preserving African-American historic neighborhoods and communities, and educate local citizens about the community benefits of historic preservation. May 9 Golf tournament Asbury United Methodist Church will host the Asbury Missions Golf Tournament on May 9 at Sunset Landing Golf Course on James Record Road at the Huntsville International Airport. Lunch and registration will at 12 p.m. and tee off will be at 1 p.m. The tournament will be a four-person scramble, $300 per team or $75 per individual, which includes fees and cart. May 10 Mooresville Walking Tour The Mooresville Walking Tour and Festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 rain or shine from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. There will be nineteenth century crafts and vendors, activities for children, home and garden tours, historic building tours, character actors, story telling, music and food. Admission for adults is $5, children under six free. Discounts are available for bus and tour groups. Proceeds go toward town restoration and preservation. May 12 Madison Dolphins The Madison Dolphins Swim Team is preparing for another winning season. The Dolphins have compiled an unsurpassed record of excellence in age group swimming in Alabama. Along with the coaching staff, which helps swimmers gain strength and endurance, the team members take pride in their community and have a lot of fun throughout the summer. May 17 Cougar Chase 5K Run The third annual Cougar Chase 5K Run will be held Saturday, May 17 at Sparkman Middle School. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. The fee to enter is $10 on or before May 3 and $12 after May 3. Participants will receive a race jacket, t-shirt and refreshments. Dublin Tennis Center grand opening The Dublin Tennis Center grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at Dublin Park in Madison, 8:30-10:30 a.m. There will be a free tennis carnival, which entails clinics and exhibitions, for ages three and up, Little Tennis for ages 3-5, Junior Clinic for ages 6-18 and Adult/Senior Clinic for ages 19 and up. Also, there will be Fast Serve contests for ages 10 and up, and Hit for Prizes for all ages. The event is sponsored by the City of Madison, SportsMed, S&V Sports, State Farm Insurance, YDA, Buffalo Rock-Pepsi, Publix, GTA, ProCourt Construction and USPTA. For more information, call 772-9300. June 9-13 Dyslexia program training session Greengate School will host a one-week dyslexia program training session on June 9-13 at Greengate School located at 6600 Old Madison Pike behind Sherwood Baptist Church.
