* Registration to be held for kids roller hockey league
A new roller hockey league for children ages 10-18 is being formed and registration is now taking place. The four-on-four co-ed league will be played at the Street Hockey Rink on Hughes Road next to the Madison Senior Center.
Evaluations will be held on April 13. The season will begin on April 20. Volunteers are needed to be coaches. The registration fee is $99 and includes all regular season matches and post-season tournament and a team jersey. Registration forms are available at Dublin Memorial Park and Easy Airport Parking. * Calhoun Jazz Band plays at Senior Center April 10
The Madison Senior Center invites the public to take advantage of one of many upcoming programs being offered. Bring lunch and enjoy the sounds of the Calhoun Community Jazz Band as it plays some all-time favorite tunes. The special program will be held on April 10 from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Senior Center – located on Hughes Road next to Discovery Middle School.
* Calhoun to host writers' conference
Calhoun Community College will host its second annual writer's conference from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, April 11. Both sessions will be held at the Aerospace Training Center at Calhoun's Decatur campus. The theme of the conference will be Modern American Poetry. The event will feature poets Donna Holt. The conference is free and open to the public. For more information, call 306-2713.
* Senior Prom at Madison Senior Center
Make plans to attend the popular Senior Prom. Senior Prom will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Senior Center on April 19. Each year, the United Way youth volunteers coordinate prom festivities.
* Free tax preparation offered at Madison Senior Center
Free tax return preparation is being offered at the Senior Center every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon. Appointments are required. For more information, call 830-1576.
* Deadline for Chesser Scholarship applications extended
The deadline has been extended for a scholarship named for the late Janet Chesser, the first coordinator of Madison D.O.N.T. (Drugs Offer No Tomorrow). Area high school seniors now have until March 31 to submit their application for the $1,000 scholarship. Eligible to high school seniors, the scholarship, is based on the following criteria:
1. A completed, signed application form (which may be obtained at Madison County and Madison city high schools, Madison City Hall, or online at madisondont.org.
2. Three letters of recommendation from a variety of sources, such as a neighbor, friend, teacher, coach or community, church or business leader.
3. A 1,000 word essay (double-spaced and typed) on "Why I Should Help my Community in the Effort to Prevent Drug Abuse: What I can do." The essay is the most important element of the scholarship application. A scholarship panel will make the selection. For more information, call Juli Gerrits at 772-5600.
