Daniel Carlisle, a senior at Bob Jones High School in Madison, was recently selected as Outstanding Male Choral Student for District V of the Alabama Vocal Association.
Carlisle competed last November against students from several schools in the county, including Madison City Schools and Huntsville City Schools, to win the honor and the title Randall Fields is the choral director at Bob Jones.
On March 6, Carlisle, along with Grissom High School's Alexandria Conn, who is the female winner in the district, will compete for the title of State Outstanding Choral Students at Samford University in Birmingham during the 2003 Alabama All State Chorus Festival.
"I am practicing very hard for that competition. Hopefully I will be competing for some type of scholarship money," Carlisle said. "The competition is not just based on vocal ability. It is based on who you are as a person, performer, and student. I am working very hard to achieve this dream."
Carlisle said the competition package includes a resume submitted by the student, performance of a classical art song as their audition piece, and finally a complete interview before a panel of judges. Carlisle sang 'Piango Gemo' by Antonio Vivaldi for his audition piece.
Besides music, Carlisle is a student ambassador, senior SGA officer, International Thespian Society member, French Club member, and has been cast in the school musical each year.
The upcoming spring production will be "Fiddler on the Roof ".
Carlisle is in the concert choir; show choir and a member of the Buzz Cuts, a male barbershop style group.
"My dream has always been just to get a scholarship for music and pursue it in college," Carlisle said. "Most of all, I want to let people know that music means different things to different people. As long as I am singing I am happy."
Carlisle is the son of Phil and Pat Carlisle of Madison.
